When the Executive Director of Narconon Stone Hawk states,

"The organization has been corporately separate and
independent of any church or other organization since the first nonprofit public benefit corporation was founded by William Benitez on May 20, 1970." she is employing a tactic commonly used by Scientology to obscure the main issue. In this case, the issue is the link between Scientology and Narconon. The keyword is, "corporately separate." In other words, the two are separate entities on paper, but the real life connections between them are obvious and plentiful.

The Scientology Organization has used this tactic so often, it's become easily recognised by cult observers. By making statements which can be easily misinterpreted by unwary readers, they have often succeeded in defending themselves. Public Relations, Scientology style, is full of trickery and misdirection intended to confuse and obfuscate.

For example, after the cult was raided by the F.B.I. in the 70s, several of their members went to prison. The "Church's" intelligence gathering branch, the Guardian's Office, or G.O. came under scrutiny by Federal agencies. (Curiously, this question was never raised; why would a church need an intelligence branch?) The Church of Scientology then defended itself by stating that the G.O. had been "disbanded." The truth is, the intelligence branch still exists. They simply renamed it "Office of Special Affairs."

Another example of cult trickery lies in their policy of Fair Game.
Fair Game, simply stated, is a policy which permits "enemies" of the church to be harassed. Here is the quote from L. Ron Hubbard outlining this policy:

"SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by
any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the
Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."

When the Fair Game policy was exposed to the public, a new policy was issued to repair the damage:

"The practice of declaring people FAIR GAME will cease. FAIR GAME may not appear on any Ethics Order. It causes bad public relations.
This P/L does not cancel any policy on the treatment or handling of an SP."

While Scientology claims that Fair Game no longer exists, if you read this carefully, you will see that it clearly states that the policy does not change the treatment or handling of a Scientology "enemy," or SP. (Suppressive Person) What changed was the policy of DECLARING people Fair Game. See? Tricky and deceptive!

See for yourself!

Another tactic commonly employed by the cult is the creation of front groups with names similar to those of legitimate organizations.

Narconon closely mimics "Narcanon," a name sometimes used to describe Narcotics Anonymous support groups. However, while one is actively involved in helping people understand and conquer addiction, Narconon is a front group designed to make people think that the Church of Scientology is concerned with this social problem. Hard evidence demonstrates that the Narconon program is not only useless in addressing addiction, parts of the program can be very dangerous to people with liver damage, as the purification process involves ingesting toxic doses of Niacin.

Scientology's most disgusting tactic to date has got to be their action following the 9-11 tragedy in New York City. A crawling banner was seen on Fox News, urging people to call for mental health counseling. The name of the organization was "National Mental Health Assistance." The phone number was that of Dianetics, another L. Ron Hubbard creation.
The name mimicked that of the National Mental Health Association. When Fox was made aware of this deception, they pulled the banner. Scientology made a determined effort to benefit from the tragedy, with self-promotion as well as by preying on the vulnerable victims.
More information on this repulsive attempt to profit from tragedy can be found here:

With a little effort, people can find out Scientology's true motives concerning their front group creations. L. Ron Hubbard said it best;
"Make money. Make more money. Make others produce so as to make more money."
